What Is Academic Research Support?
Ensena Team · September 29, 2026

Research support is often confused with two very different things: a regular subject tutor, and a ghostwriting service. It's neither. A research-support tutor doesn't teach you a syllabus, and they don't write your work for you. They help you think through a research project you're already doing, at whatever stage it's at.
In practice, that usually means one of a few things: narrowing an overly broad research question into something you can actually investigate, choosing a methodology that fits your question, structuring a literature review so it builds an argument instead of just listing sources, or working through a specific chapter you're stuck on.
This kind of support is useful at every level, not just PhD. An undergraduate doing a final-year project faces the same structural problems a PhD candidate does, just at a smaller scale: how do I know if my question is answerable, and how do I organize what I've found into something coherent?
A dissertation or thesis is a related but slightly different kind of support: more sustained, chapter by chapter, over months rather than a single session. If you're working on a long-form research document rather than a shorter project, that's usually the better starting point.
What research support should never involve: a tutor producing text that gets submitted as your own work. Ensena's research-support tutors work with you, not instead of you. The research, the writing and the submission stay yours.
